How to Store Kratom: Do’s & Don’ts

Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) typically begins to degrade very quickly. The basic rule of thumb for this substance is that it’ll stay fresh for approximately three months after harvesting.

When you consider how much traveling it does after being harvested, this can cut your kratom’s life significantly.

Fortunately, we’ve got some tips that will teach you how to store kratom, so it stays fresh for up to one year.

How to Store Kratom Properly: DOs and DON’Ts

There are many ways for you to expand the life of kratom. The easiest is to store it properly. Use the following tips to ensure your kratom lasts as long as possible.

DO: Make Sure Your Kratom Remains Dry

Mold is one of the worst things that can happen to kratom. Once it’s been introduced into your kratom’s storage system, the entire batch will need to be thrown out.

To avoid having to throw away expensive kratom, make sure that you store it in a manner that will avoid all moisture.

DON’T: Let Kratom Breathe

Once kratom is ground up, it should never need to breathe. Choosing to let it do so anyway invites contamination and oxidization.

DO: Always Store it in an Airtight Container

Keeping your kratom in an airtight container will help avoid outside environmental influences. Choose a container that seals tightly and securely. The best option is to choose a jar with a brand-new lid.

DON’T: Store in a Damp Environment

It doesn’t matter how good you think the seal is on your container. Don’t take the chance of allowing dampness to get into your kratom. This includes humidity.

DO: Keep Your Kratom Cool

The most important part of kratom storage is a consistent and cool temperature. This means that keeping it in your refrigerator will work. However, if your power goes out for more than a few minutes, it could spell the end of that particular batch.

DON’T: Use Fancy Equipment

Have you been tempted to store your kratom in a cigar humidor? Unfortunately, this fancy equipment can allow your kratom to get ruined. Stick to the basics with an airtight bag or storage container.

DO: Keep it Away from UV Light

Did you know that the sun’s rays can damage kratom? You should always opt for brown amber or opaque jars. If you’re unable to find them, at least make sure that sunlight doesn’t come into contact with your kratom.

DON’T: Choose a Place with Fluctuating Temperatures

There are bad ideas and even worse ones. As far as kratom is concerned, fluctuating temperatures are the absolute worst idea.

Avoid storing it in the cabinet over your dryer, above the back of your refrigerator, or near an HVAC vent. Choose a dry, cool, and dark place with a consistent temperature instead.

DO: Avoid Excessive Oxygen

Oxidization is something you want to avoid at all costs. Again, always use airtight containers or bags.

DO: Steer Clear of Strong Smells

Storing kratom improperly can lead to it absorbing strong smells. For instance, if you use an old cigar humidor, your kratom may end up smelling like cigars.

DO: Daily Storage Tips

When you’re trying to use your kratom on a regular basis, the safest way is by putting each day’s supply in a small plastic bag. Utilizing vacuum seal bags is the best way to remove air.

Once you’ve got a month’s supply bagged up, put each bag into a bigger, airtight container.

DO: Long-Term Storage Tips

Once again, place your daily kratom in small bags. Then, place all the bags into a larger, airtight container.

DO: Tea Storage Tips

If you choose to ingest kratom as tea, you have a few options for storage. The best is to make an entire pot of tea, then let it cool to room temperature. When ready, transfer it to an ice cube tray or a plastic container.

Do NOT use a glass container if you’ll be freezing your tea. You could also refrigerate it, but this will only last for about one week.

Can I Store Kratom in My Freezer?

There have been a lot of questions regarding kratom storage and the usage of a freezer. When you’re storing tea that’s already been made, your freezer is an ideal storage option. But what about storing kratom powder?

The truth is that there’s not been enough research either way.

Although a freezer is cool, dark, and humidity-free, there are other factors to consider. For example, what happens if your kratom gets freezer burned?

We can’t make a suggestion either way, but we warn you to be cautious with your freezer. It’s simply not worth ruining your kratom over.

If you must experiment with freezing, your best bet is to purchase a mini-fridge. That way, you’ll avoid soaking up bad smells. Additionally, you can keep a better eye on your kratom.

Freezing as a Potentiator

One thing we do know for sure is that freezing does work as a potentiator.

Start by soaking your kratom. Next, shake it vigorously before putting it in the freezer. The cell walls will burst, thereby making your kratom more bioavailable.

In other words, your kratom will become more potent.

Buy Kratom From a Reputable Dealer

As long as you purchase your kratom from a reputable dealer, you should have some time to store it properly. However, if you purchase kratom from someone questionable, even the best storage techniques may be a waste of time and energy.

The truth is that you have a maximum of three months to store kratom. But that’s not three months after buying it. Instead, that’s three months after it was harvested.

Some dealers sell kratom that’s a year old already. Even worse, they typically haven’t stored it properly.

Avoid these issues by choosing a reputable dealer.

Always Purchase the Right Amount of Kratom

Many vendors offer a huge discount if you buy kratom in bulk. But what good will that do you if you can’t use it in time?

You’ll need to figure out how much kratom you use before you purchase a large quantity.

After all, buying 500g may not provide as good of a deal. But if that’s all you can realistically use, then it’s the right amount for you. Buying 1 kilo instead will lead to wasting about half of your kratom.

Check Your Kratom on a Regular Basis

No matter how you choose to store your kratom, be sure to check it regularly. This can help you avoid several issues, including freezer burn.

Some of the warning signs you’re looking for include:

  • Changes in smell
  • Changes in color
  • Visible signs of freezer burn
  • Visible signs of decay
  • Signs of mold

If any of these signs occur, it’s a bad sign for the future of your kratom. If you see mold, decay, or freezer burn, you should get rid of the kratom.

Other issues such as loss of smell or color will have an impact on the performance of your kratom. You may experience:

  • Full effects may be dampened
  • Effects may not last as long
  • Benefits may suffer

Key Takeaways: Storing Kratom

As long as you follow the tips listed above, your kratom should last for up to a year.

Remember, this means keeping it cool, dark, and dry inside an airtight container. You’ll also need to stay away from UV light and humidity. Additionally, steer clear of strong smells and oxygen.

Don’t forget that you should never let your kratom breathe. Avoid fluctuating temperatures and damp environments. Finally, never use fancy equipment for storage, such as cigar humidors.

Always purchase fresh kratom from a reputable dealer. Be sure to keep an eye on it for mold growth, and never use any of the powder if there’s even a tiny bit of mold.

Following these tips will ensure that you have fresh kratom for the long term!
