A Detailed Guide To the “Toss & Wash” Method

If you’ve been part of the kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) scene for more than a minute, you’ve heard the phrase “toss and wash.”

Put simply; this phrase means putting some kratom in your mouth (toss) and then drinking some liquid (wash).

Is this the best way to take kratom? That’s debatable, but most kratom enthusiasts swear by this method. It may not taste the best, but it gets the uncomfortable taste over with quickly — like ripping off a band-aid.

This method works significantly better for most people. You can avoid the risk of coughing, choking, or gagging, and you’ll avoid most of the bitter taste. In other words, the mix and wash method is a win-win!

Why Should You Toss & Wash Kratom?

This is the tried and true method of consuming kratom for a reason. Most people will inevitably land on this method of consumption after trying the other modes of preparation for a while first.

It’s simple but effective.

  1. It’s the easiest method of consumption.
  2. It’s the most effective method of consumption.
  3. No special technique or requirements.
  4. You’ll learn to become more patient and will soon stop gagging or coughing.

Best Toss & Wash Beverages

Although you can use almost any beverage, there are a few that seem to go down more smoothly.

Orange Juice

Make sure your glass of orange juice is really cold. If you’re mixing kratom with orange juice, use a whisk for optimal results.

To make it even better, freshly squeeze your juice. Either way, though, the acidic qualities in OJ will help by disguising the taste of kratom.

Mango Juice

The taste of orange juice may be better, but the texture of mango juice is just right. After all, kratom can completely dissolve in mango juice, which means you’re even less likely to notice the bitter flavor.

Grapefruit Juice

Grapefruit juice is way better than orange juice at hiding kratom’s natural flavor. If you take into account that grapefruit juice is also an antioxidant, you’ll be taking your kratom with a superfood boost.

Grapefruit is also a well-known inhibitor of many liver enzymes. This will slow the breakdown of the active ingredients in your kratom — ultimately leading to longer duration of effects.

Lemonade

There’s a perfect way to counteract the taste of kratom: raw sugar. If you’re planning on taking kratom with lemonade, add a spoonful of raw sugar to get the best possible taste.

Chamomile Tea

Those who prefer to take kratom at night have the option of mixing it with chamomile tea. The taste of kratom compliments chamomile, too!

Mint Tea

Peppermint or spearmint tea works well with kratom and will overpower kratom’s flavor.

Just remember that you can’t place kratom in tea that’s hotter than 205 degrees Fahrenheit. To avoid this, let the tea cool for about 10 minutes before you place your kratom in it.

When Should I Split My Kratom Dose?

It’s best to split your kratom dose once it gets bigger than 2 g.

For most of you, this will mean taking at least two to three smaller doses and possibly much more. That’s the downside, but the upside is that you won’t have to worry about breathing in the kratom or choking on it.

Alternative Methods to Toss & Wash

Some people will never get used to the toss and wash method. The good news is that you don’t have to! There are a few other methods for ingesting kratom, so pick the one that’s right for you.

Kratom Capsules

The easiest method for taking kratom is to invest in kratom capsules. You can buy encapsulated kratom from many vendors.

To save money, you can also encapsulate kratom on your own. It will still cost more than using the toss and wash method, but this extra expense will make taking kratom a more pleasant experience.

Mix Kratom with Food

Although this technique isn’t as effective or quick as doing the toss and wash method, it tastes better!

The number one choice of food is applesauce, but you can use almost anything that has some sweetness to it. For instance, other options include mango pulp and peanut butter.

Freshly Brewed Tea

You can get rid of kratom’s bitter taste by brewing it into tea

It’s important to note that this method will destroy some of kratom’s alkaloids. On the plus side, it will prevent kratom particles from getting stuck in your mouth. As long as you use lemon or another similar sweetener, the taste will be diminished, too.

Boofing Kratom

This is an inside joke in the kratom community — especially on Reddit.

Boofing refers to placing a dose of kratom in your rectum to facilitate a faster onset of effects and much stronger potency. Your rectal cavity contains a ton of microcapillaries that allow for rapid absorption of substances directly into the bloodstream.

While this method certainly works, it’s not very comfortable and definitely not recommended.

Final Thoughts: Tossing and Washing Kratom is Quick & Effective

Choosing how to take kratom will have a big impact on whether you like it or love it.

The toss and wash method has continuously grown in popularity because it’s simple, quick, and effective.

The mix and wash method may require a bit of extra prep, but it’s going to taste better.

Finally, if you discover tossing and washing is not your thing, you can still take kratom in capsule form or mix it with your food.

The important thing is to find a method of ingestion that you can repeat. Kratom will never magically taste good, but the results it provides are worth a bit of inconvenience. And if you pick the mix and wash method or one of the other alternatives, you may even find that you like the process of taking kratom instead of just the benefits it gives you.
